The tale of the shepherd and the seamstress
(牛郎, 織女) is one of the most enduring stories in classic Chinese mythology. The story goes that the mortal shepherd had fallen in love with a goddess, who was disguised as a seamstress, and their love bore fruit. However, it is not a done thing for a mortal to fall in love with a goddess and they were separated. Out of compassion, every year on the seventh day of the seventh month, they were allowed to meet in the middle of a bridge across the Silver River in heaven.
